GRANT GUIDELINES

The Foundation seeks initiatives that perform the following: expand awareness and involvement in programs related to the arts and the environment, encourage public participation in environmental and art projects, and develop or conserve valuable environmental and cultural resources for public use and posterity. The Foundation supports community initiatives that address critical as well as major cultural and heritage enrichment programs.

The Foundation will be accepting applications for community-based projects, primarily in the state of New Mexico, in the areas of arts, education, environment or a combination of the three focus areas.  Other areas of the United States are also considered for grants at the board discretion. The Foundation will award two grants for $20,000 (by board invitation only) and four grants for $10,000 (applications due November 15th).

The 2008 Grant Application for $10,000 is now closed. Applications will be accepted for the 2009 granting cycle up to November 15, 2008.

These grants will be announced by December 15, 2008.

Small grants under $5000 may also be awarded at Board discretion throughout the year.

These grants will be announced by February 15, 2008.

Matching funds of at least 25% of the granted amount are required.  For example, if you are given $10,000 then you will need to have a $2,500 contribution or 25% of the granted amount.  The match may be provided in cash or by in-kind contributions and other non-cash support.  In-kind contributions often include salaries or other verifiable costs and this value must be carefully documented.  In the case of salaries, applicants may use either minimum wage or fair market value. 

The Foundation reserves the right to fully or partially fund any request.  The Albert I. Pierce Foundation will only accept one request per organization per grant cycle.

The Foundation makes grants to qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations which are tax exempt and are not private foundations as defined by the Internal Revenue Code. The Foundation also makes grants to federally recognized Indian tribes, governmental agencies, and private and public schools, colleges, and universities.  Local and state arts and environmental agencies may also apply. Grants for specific projects, operating expenses, and capital expenses are considered. No grants are made to individuals or to cover deficits. Collaboration among grant seekers is encouraged.

LIMITATIONS

Grants are generally not given to or for:

• Sectarian or religious organizations
• Testimonial dinners, fund-raising events, or advertising
• Payments of loans, interest, taxes, or debt retirement
• Capital campaigns or endowments
• Grant making institutions
• Programs or project that duplicate existing services and/or programs
• Lobbying or political activity
• Construction or acquisition of real property
• Organizations located outside of the United States
• Emergency funding
